NIBA NEWS: NEW DELHI, September 26, 2018

Despite having ruled that the Aadhaar scheme which collects biometric data from every citizen and assigns a national identity card to them does not violate the right to privacy and is constitutionally valid, the Supreme Court, in its verdict on Wednesday has clarified the reach of the system.

The Aadhaar verdict was announced by a five-judge constitution bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.K. Sikri, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice Ashok Bhushan.

Here are pointers on what is allowed and what is not:

  1. Private firms such as cellphone companies or private banks cannot ask for your Aadhaar information for a new connection, etc.
  2. Your bank account also does not have to be linked to your Aadhaar ID.
  3. Schools cannot ask for a child’s Aadhaar details even if it is for admission.
  4. Your Aadhaar, however, should be linked to your PAN card information for the filing of your tax returns.
